AETA ASSASSINS FOR THE WIN!!!

I’m tripping on this book I’m reading. It’s set in 1897, New York. I’m trying to get a better sense of the zeitgeist of that era, and the book I’m reading is great in a sense that in New York, there’s a growing sense of distrust between America and Spain, and Manila plays a big part. Manila has been called the greatest jewel in the Spanish crown in this book, written by Caleb Carr, and I feel so giddy reading about it.

Anyway, so, it’s all gaslight and carriages and trains, and somebody’s out to take out the protagonists, so they sent… an Aeta Assassin! How cool is that? At first they thought it was a ten year old black boy throwing kris and shooting blowdarts at them, until they made the Spanish-Manila connection (the pirates are called Manilamen).

AETA ASSASSINS! I don’t know how many times I can repeat that phrase to you guys before you realize how cool is that. I wish I had come up with it first.
